PM Modi meets President Murmu amid Parliament logjam and trade tensions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, in a meeting that comes against the backdrop of significant national and international developments. The ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament has seen little business since its commencement on July 21, with the Opposition demanding a full discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the state's assembly elections. Opposition parties allege that the revision is an attempt to remove genuine voters and have intensified their protests, causing a stalemate.

The Prime Minister's meeting with the President also follows a challenging week on the foreign policy front, after US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs and penalties on Indian exports due to New Delhi's continued military and energy ties with Russia. This meeting is seen by observers as a crucial high-level consultation during a period of considerable domestic political disruption and international economic pressure.
